CONQUER (Control series #3)

by: M.S. Willis

***Content Warning - This is a new adult fiction with mature themes. It contains graphic sexual situations, mature language and explicit description of sexual violence.***

Conquer is the third book in the Control series. This description contains spoilers for those who have not read books one and two in the series, entitled Control and Conflict.

Private Investigator, Paige Stone’s world was shattered when she learned truths about her past. Following her discovery, Paige is forced into a situation where she needs to accept that, although a person can control their mind and body, the circumstances of their lives are far outside their grasp. As Paige struggles with coming to terms about events in her life, she is also put through the harrowing task of learning when to fight and when to let go.

Strong-willed and arrogant, Daemon Pierce agrees to help Paige on her hunt for Chris. As Daemon instructs her how to fight with both body and mind, he breaks down the final walls she has built around her heart.

Paige and Daemon’s emotional journey concludes as they learn the meaning of love and forgiveness, and ultimately...surrender.

Fiddling with my fingers, I attempted to avoid looking at him while he processed the information I’d provided.  When he finally spoke again, I jumped slightly.  “It pisses me off knowing Chris has been following you this whole time.  I don’t fucking understand how he got your tag number.  I followed you out that night to make sure you stayed safe!”   His hand hit the steering wheel with a loud thump. Taking a breath to calm himself, he sagged back in his seat.  “Regardless, you may be right about his reason for fixating on you.  So, you need to keep that in mind at all times.  No more fucking stunts on your own, okay?”
“I know, Daemon.  I already promised that to you.”
Nodding his head, he turned the truck sharply into his garage.  After pulling into a space, he turned the vehicle off, but didn’t move to open his door.
His eyes remained trained straight ahead as he said, “Damsel, if Chris were to ever get ahold of you again, he’s not going to play around with you anymore.  You’ve escaped him twice, humiliated him four times, if you count those escapes.   It’s unlikely he’d wait long before killing you.”
His head suddenly swung to look in my direction.  The desperate plea in his eyes caused my breath to hiccup.  “Paige, I can’t lose you, not like that.  If I ever have to let you go, I want it to be when we are old and silver.  I want a life behind us, memories behind us; possibly kids…who knows?  All I know is that I would lose my mind if I lost you before then.”
My heart skipped, as my throat closed.  Tears threatened my eyes and my nose became stuffy.  I never understood why a heavy emotional reaction felt like an illness, but the symptoms were definitely the same.
Having no words in response to his, I lunged over.   My hands buried themselves into his hair as my mouth took possession of his.  My body prickled at the feel of his warm mouth upon mine and I greedily sought more of him with my tongue.  My chest heaved with intense desire, a churning sea of hormones and…love.  Needing to be closer, I climbed over to straddle him.   I pulled away from our kiss to look deep in to his sparkling blue eyes.  When our gaze locked, heat bloomed throughout my body.  My hands found the hem of my shirt and I pulled up on the material, freeing it before tossing it to the floor.  Daemon’s hands instantly found my breasts, squeezing to the point of pain.   Lightning shot through me from where he touched causing me to arch further into his hold.  A moan escaped my lips as his mouth found my neck.   This man did things to my body that I never knew were possible.  He made me feel dirty, but in a way that was only meant for him.  I lost all inhibition around him, not caring about what I was saying or doing, as long as it pleased him.  When he touched me it felt like my body melted to his, becoming one.   His scent and the feel of his hard body against mine was all that was needed to completely sedate my mind, while at the same time awakening every naughty part on my body.

Star Rating: 4 out of 5

Heat Rating:  HOT!!

I loved this series from start to finish!  Conquer did not disappoint, it was a great conclusion to a fabulous trilogy.  Being the third book in the series, I was prepared to be sad when the book ended but I found myself sighing with pleasure, it was the perfect way to say goodbye to these characters (but it really isn't goodbye, I hear there are spin offs in the works for Alex and then for Annie *happy dance*)

M.S. Willis, as always, is great with dialogue; it is witty, poignant, heartfelt and very human (meaning the characters aren't perfect when they talk).  The pacing for Conquer wasn't as fast paced as Conflict, but this was a nice change, it gives the reader a chance to really see Daemon and Paige building their relationship and interact with each other as a couple.  However, this does not mean it was a slow read at all, it was a book that slowed down the action but the story itself still moved at a great pace.  I love getting to see these characters that I have fallen in love get time to be together and discover how powerful love can be.

Conquer dives into Daemon's past and really lets us get to know him, helping us understand why he didn't let on earlier about who he really was.  I have to say I am in LOVE with Daemon's character!  He was so different and refreshing.  Was he perfect? No, but I really enjoyed that this man always knew what he wanted and where his heart belonged.  There was no back and forth with him, there was no ex-girlfriends or hook-ups coming back to haunt him, there was just him wanting Paige to be his.  I liked the twist on the typical, in this series too. It was Daemon trying to convince Paige that what they had was real and was meant to be forever, and it was Paige who was the unsure one (usually it is the woman convincing the man).

M.S. Willis knocked my socks off with her writing once again, it is hard to believe this was her first series!  She is an automatic buy Author for me.  If she writes it, I will buy it.  I HIGHLY recommend this series and Conquer is a great ending to this wonderful story about Paige and Daemon.  Hit that 1-click button and enjoy!

An Interview with M.S. Willis:

1. What kind of snack/drink is a MUST for you when writing?

Coffee!  I must have coffee!  All forms of coffee; hot coffee, cold coffee, iced coffee.  LOL!  But in all seriousness…I’m being serious.  I’ve been addicted for years and I’m considering buying stock in Starbucks to make back some of the cash I’ve blown on the thousands of frappuccinos I’ve undoubtedly drank over the years.

2. What made you start writing?

I’ve always been a writer, since I learned how to pick up a pencil and mix letters together to make words.  However, although I’d like to be able to say that it was a lifelong desire that finally bloomed with the Control series, that’s not exactly the case.  I’m a huge reader, and my editor and I have our own little two person book club.  While impatiently waiting on the next book in one the series we were reading, I made the complaint that it was taking too long for the book to be released and I thought…’how long does it really take to write a book?’  That night, I bought a laptop and set out to find the answer to the question.  Two months later, and I was releasing the first book of the Control series.  I discovered two things while writing the books…#1 – I LOVE writing just as much as I LOVE reading!  And #2 – writing a book is a LOT of work.  I now have the answer to the question I’d asked, but I also discovered the joy of writing and through it, the joy of touching other people’s hearts and lives.  It’s something I’ll continue doing for a looooooong time to come.

3. What is your biggest inspiration source (where do you get your ideas)

I’ve always been an avid ‘people-watcher’ (that’s creepy, I know), but watching how different people react to similar situations, or how body language can give away what a person is feeling or thinking has always been something I’ve unconsciously done.  My ideas come from different people who have touched my life, whether for years or for just a few seconds.  Add that to my crazy and insane dreams, plus information pulled from the deep, dark recesses of my imagination, and I’ve found plenty of material from which to pull for my books.
4. Describe your perfect writing space? and where do you actually write?

My perfect writing space would be a room in a high tower with four windows overlooking a city on one side, the wide open country on another, a magical forest on the third side, and some paranormal otherworld on the fourth.  LOL.  BUT, since I don’t have that type of place where I can go, I usually lock myself in my bedroom and lounge on my bed with my computer in my lap as I attempt to escape from my family for a few hours at a time.

5. Is writing your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

I’ve worked in law as a paralegal and investigator for…oh jeez…let me do the math…17 years!  However, I’m extremely excited to share that I will be leaving law behind me soon and writing full time!!!

6. What is one surprising fact about you, that not too many people know?

I listen to musicals when I write.  Not kidding.  Sometimes when I’m having trouble getting the creative juices flowing, I’ll turn on Phantom of the Opera or Les Miserables and let the emotions from the songs help me through some tough scenes in my books.  I could probably be a one woman show and sing both plays from beginning to end, but I guarantee if I attempted that, you would not want to be there to hear it.  I’m a horrible singer. LOL.

7. What are you writing now?

Currently I’m finishing writing ‘Madeleine, Abducted’ which is slated for release in October, 2013.  It’s a book about a woman taken captive, and used as a pawn in a game between a criminal father and his son.  It’s a darker novel than the books of the Control series, but one, I’m sure, readers will enjoy.

8. What is the first Romance book you remember reading? What is the last book you read?

Wow…that is a hard question.  The first actual ‘romance’ book I can remember reading was a book called “Angel’s Blood’ by Nalini Singh.  Prior to that, I’d never really been introduced to the genre.  It’s paranormal romance, I know, but I think that counts.  The last book I read was, interestingly, “Archangel’s Blade” which is the fourth book in that series. I just finished rereading the entire series in anticipation of the sixth book which comes out this year.

9. Who is your current book boyfriend/crush?

Currently, it’s Aaron Carmichael from Madeleine, Abducted.  LOL.  But if I have to pick another book boyfriend that doesn’t do and say everything I want him to, I’d go with Ryder from Promise Me Darkness by Paige Weaver.  Yum.
10. What was the last book you read that gave you a "book hangover?"

Another hard question, I’ve read so many that it’s hard to name just one. I’m currently going through my Kindle to figure out the answer…’Undeniable’ by Madeline Sheehan.  Wow…just wow.  That book left me in a haze for two days, and contemplating whether I should join a motorcycle gang.
