Review: FIGHTING TO FORGET by JB Salsbury

Fighting to Forget (Fighting #3)

Every fighter is drawn to the violence, the release that a perfect hit can bring. But very few are drawn to the pain. Rex Carter lives behind a wall of indifference. The demons from his childhood act as an anesthetic, keeping him distant from emotional connections. Only the ache from a knock to the jaw, the sting of a tattoo needle, or the heat from a piercing can jolt him back from the numbness. The fiery pain is all he can feel, and nothing compares to the burn. Or so he thought. Working in a Las Vegas bar isn't Georgia McIntyre's dream. But she hopes it'll be an end to the nightmare. She's watched him, followed him and kept tabs, all in preparation for this moment: to make amends and share the secret she’s been carrying since she was a kid. But she didn't count on the feelings that seeing him again would stir up, the vacant look in his stormy-blue eyes, and his perfect body now mutilated by ink and metal. And she knows why. She's lived his pain every single day, since the day he left. Changed by time, Rex doesn't remember the girl from his past. If only she could do the same. Will she get the absolution she's spent her life seeking? Or will he continue Fighting to Forget?

I loved Fighting to Forget hard! I read it cover to cover in one night, I could not put it down and it was worth the book hangover the next day.  JB Salsbury is a master storyteller and can evoke deep and heart wrenching emotions with just her words. I am sitting here days later and still get tears in my eyes and find myself sighing when I think of Rex and Mac/Gia's story. This series has to be one of the best MMA book series out there (and I have read many).  JB Salsbury, if it is possible, gets better and better with each book in this series.

Fighting to Forget isn't an easy story to read.  There are lots of heart breaking and disturbing things that happen to these poor characters in the past, but overcoming this past and finding each other again makes this story so beautiful.  JB Salsbury gives us a story with many, many layers and weaves characters and plot points from Fighting for Flight and Fighting to Forgive beautifully.  You don't have to read the other books in the series to enjoy this story (it is a stand alone) but I would recommend reading this series in order (because it is so very good) so you can really get all the depth, emotion and revelations that come up in Fighting to Forget.  This is not a book about MMA fighting.  This is a book about a fighter, who is doing his best just to get through the day and find something that helps him cope with is issues and creating a family within the MMA community.  If you are picking this up to read about lots of fighting, you aren't going to get that, you are getting an amazing story about survival, forgiveness and learning to let love in your life.

The characters in this book are brilliantly written. You get very invested in their lives/stories and find yourself rooting for them, crying with them and wanting them to get their slice of happily ever after. JB Salsbury is a brilliant at creating characters that are intense, funny, sexy, strong and and slightly broken, you don't get the average fighter meets girl romance with her and I LOVE that!  Fighting to Forget introduces us to Rex and Mac/Gia but we also get to revisit Jonah/Raven and Layla/Blake and get more of their stories as well.  With characters as fascinating as these I am always going to want more information on them and I was happy that JB Salsbury was able to intermix these characters into this story seamlessly.

Rex's is story will break your heart.  Gia/Mac will make so angry at her that at times you just want to throw your hands in the air and scream.  However, this is all worth it because when Rex and Gia/Mac are together it is beautiful and they will be one of those book couples that I never forget (I still get flashbacks to parts of their romance a week later).  Fighting to Forget is a MUST read!  If you haven't read this series you are in for a treat with this JB Salsbury offering and if you have been a fan of this series you are going to love Rex!  I can't wait to see what JB Salsbury gives us next in Fighting the Fall coming in October.
