Review: BANG (#1 The Black Lotus series) by E.K. Blair

BANG (The Black Lotus #1)

I have been staring at this blank screen completely gobsmacked at how to write this review.  I finished Bang a week ago and I am still not sure how to rate this book or how to put into words all the emotions this book evoked.  What I do know is that E.K. Blair blew my mind!

Bang was a book that was really hard to read, not because of the writing but due to some of the story lines and the gut wrenching scenes in this book.  I will admit to almost putting this book away after realizing what direction things were going in young Elizabeth's life, but I pushed through and came out on the other side of the (sometimes horrific) story and I am glad I did.  E.K. Blair took a leap with this book, she digs deep and gives you a story you don't want to read but can't help yourself by turning the pages.  The writing is so good, the layout of the story is intriguing and pushes the reader just to the point where you don't think you can take anymore and then you realize you can't put this down... you HAVE to know!

Bang is a story that will haunt you, fascinate you and make you crave to understand these characters.  I wanted to hate Elizabeth/Nina but I couldn't.  You want her to get the satisfaction she craves but at the same time you want her to find something else to save her.  GAH!  This story is still tearing me up and I won't spoil a thing for you because most of what makes Bang so good is you never know what is coming and you can't predict what will happen next.

E.K. Blair won me over with her Fading series and I fell in love with her writing and the way she can make characters feel so deeply while connecting the reader to the story.  In Bang she really pushes the readers past your comfort zone, shoves very dark things in your face and has you reeling from page one.  E.K. Blair's talent really shines in this book.  Whether or not you can stomach the story line you have to applaud an author that can wrap you up in a story like this and come out on the other side speechless.  I am truly amazed and in awe how the same author can write two series that cause such a reaction in the reader.  E.K. Blair has the rare ability to surround you with her words, push your boundaries and leave you breathless with her ability to write such an emotion-inducing story.

I won't tell you much about the plot, but I will say that you find yourself wanting things that you shouldn't want, cringing over the life that these characters have to live and then hoping for it all to magically be OK.  The heat level in this book is intense, uncomfortable and so worth the journey!  The last 10% of this book I held my breath and was left shocked, angry, and in tears but INSTANTLY needing more of this story.  E.K. Blair has me hooked!  As uncomfortable as I was during parts of this story it was  worth it to get to the place I am at now; gasping for more!

If you aren't afraid to read a story that will send your emotions all over the place and push your boundaries of what you are comfortable reading then I HIGHLY recommend Bang!  This isn't an easy read, but that is part of what makes Bang so damn good.  E.K. Blair has proven with this new series that she can write anything and I will read it and be moved by it.

They say when you take revenge against another you lose a part of your innocence.
But I’m not innocent.
I haven’t been for a very long time.
My innocence was stolen from me. Taken was the life I was supposed to have. The soul I was born with. The ruby heart embedded in a life full of hopes and dreams.

I never even had a choice.
I mourn that life. Mourn the what-ifs.
Until now.
I’m ready to take back what was always meant to be mine.

But every plan has a fatal flaw. Sometimes it’s the heart.

**Due to the dark and explicit nature of this book, it is recommended for mature audiences only as some scenes may be particularly disturbing.**
