Review & Giveaway: WHEN WE MET (Fool's Gold series) by Susan Mallery

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can’t be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool’s Gold, California, he’s cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he’s not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe-to-toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

I remember reading the very first book set in Fool's Gold back in 2010, Chasing Perfect, and gobbling up each book that came out as fast as I could.  Somehow,  I got behind in my Fool's Gold reading (I have read up to book #8, When We Met is book #13) but that didn't matter one bit!  I was able to pick up When We Met and dive right back in to the Fool's Gold community.  Susan Mallery does a wonderful job treating each book as a standalone but at the same time weaving all the stories together in a truly wonderful series about a town, that quite frankly, I want to move to!  If you have never read a book by Susan Mallery, no worries, you can dive right in and start here with Angel and Taryn (and then catch up on all the town goings on in the previous books at a later date, like I plan to do soon).

I adore Susan Mallery and she has been a go-to Author for me for years!  I think (except catching up on Fool's Gold) I have read the majority of her backlist!  Having been away from Fool's Gold for several books now I was overjoyed that I could pick up When We Met and feel like I was coming back home to Fool's Gold.  Susan Mallery has a way of writing her stories so that they stand apart but blend together beautifully to create a series about a town/family/community.  Her characters are unique, interesting and always have a bit of a quirk to them.  They are very "real" people that have real people problems and I ate this book up in one bite.

I love Fool's Gold and if it were a real town I would pack up my family an move there!  Angel and Taryn were an interesting couple to put together.  Taryn is a very independent personality that has very strong opinions and trusts no one but herself.  She is puts all her energy in her job and her wardrobe (it is one hell of a wardrobe too).  Angel is another strong personality that is all man and muscle (but with a soft heart).  I really enjoyed seeing these two individuals come together and form a unit.  The banter, the chemistry and the depth of emotion was a treat.

Susan Mallery is a wonderful story teller.  She knows when to add that touch of drama, when to tempt you with some heat and when to hold back.  Her pacing and unfolding of plot points is spot on and she seamlessly adds new characters and other stories into the current book getting you ready for future stories.  If you have never read a Susan Mallery book before, do yourself a BIG favor and get your hands on When We Met (or any Fool's Gold book) you will be hooked!  Fans of this series will love Angel and Taryn and will understand that Susan Mallery is truly the Queen of Happy Endings even if Fool's Gold has to change its slogan ;)
